The hidden reason some rooms just feel right - and others don’t
In my last blog posts, I talked about how your home can support your emotional wellbeing and how designing through a neuroaesthetic lens can help you create a space that truly feels like you. But today, I want to zoom in on something that’s often underestimated in interior design, yet it affects your mood every single day: colour.
Because colour isn’t just about choosing a paint swatch or matching cushions. It’s not purely decorative. It’s emotional. It’s sensory. And it can change how you feel in a space, whether you realise it or not.
Why Colour Affects You (Before You Even Know It)
Have you ever walked into a room and just felt something – maybe calmer, more alert, or oddly unsettled without really knowing why?
That feeling probably started with colour. Even before you notice the furniture or layout, your brain has already taken in the colour palette and reacted. This is what I love about neuroaesthetic design, it helps us understand that beauty isn’t just visual.
Here’s What Happens in Your Brain
When you see colour, your eyes send signals to the part of the brain called the hypothalamus – which controls everything from your stress levels and hormones to your sleep cycle and emotional state. So yes — the colours around you can:
- Raise or lower your heart rate
- Impact your mood and focus
- Make it easier (or harder) to wind down
- Affect how safe, energised, or connected you feel.
What Different Colours Actually Do
Let me walk you through some of the colours I use most in emotional interior design and how they tend to make people feel.
Blue – calm, clear, emotionally steady
Blue is my go-to for bedrooms, bathrooms, or any space where you need to switch off and reconnect with yourself. It’s been shown to reduce stress and help the body slow down.
Green – grounding, gentle, natural
Green is incredibly balancing. It connects us back to nature, supports emotional healing, and gives the nervous system something soft to lean into.
Neutrals – stillness, simplicity, softness
Neutrals help create breathing space, especially when life feels chaotic. Cream, beige, taupe… they don’t demand attention. They offer quiet.
Yellow – warmth, optimism, morning energy
A soft yellow can feel uplifting and hopeful, especially in kitchens or creative spaces. It supports serotonin production (your happy hormone), but in bold doses, it can be too much.
Red – stimulation, confidence, boldness
Red activates. It’s powerful, passionate, and a little goes a long way. Great for statement pieces, but too much red in a space for rest? It can feel like your nervous system is shouting.
Black – depth, boundaries, sophisticatio
Used wisely, black adds focus and weight to a space. It’s not harsh, it can be quite protective and grounding, especially in open-plan homes.
But It’s Not Just One Colour - It’s the Whole Story
We don’t experience colour in isolation. It’s always affected by:
- Lighting (natural light vs warm bulbs makes the same wall feel totally different)
- Texture (a velvet green sofa feels different than a glossy green wall)
- Contrast & tone (gentle tone-on-tone calms; high contrast energises)
This is why in neuroaesthetic interior design, I never just pick colours from a chart. I create a full sensory atmosphere that supports the way you want to feel, in your body, your life.
Why I Never Choose Colour Based on Trends
At Moni Clayton Interiors, I don’t follow trends. I follow you. Every colour choice I make is about you how you want to feel, what soothes you, what energises you, and how your space can support your wellbeing, not just your style. Maybe you want a soft, cocoon-like bedroom to help with sleep. Maybe you need a workspace that clears your head and helps you focus. Maybe you just want your home to feel like home again. Colour is one of the most powerful tools I use to help you get there.
Want Help Choosing Colours That Actually Feel Right?
If you’ve been staring at swatches or Pinterest boards but still don’t know where to begin or you just want your space to feel better, calmer, or more like you, I’d love to help.
Let’s create a colour story that supports your nervous system, your lifestyle, and the version of you that you want to come home to.
Warmly,
Monika
